The Class of 96

In conversation with Ian Ormondroyd, Wayne Jacobs, Andy Kiwomya and Neil Tolson.

As school reports go, the class of 96 got an A+ in every subject.

It was a fine summers’ evening on Sunday the 8th August 2017 which saw Wilsden Bantams host their first Q&A meeting with former players from the promotion winning team of 1996.  We were thrilled to secure four big names from the year which saw the crazy 10 match unbeaten run to get into the play-offs, the heartache and the ecstasy we all call Blackpool and then the job well done down at Wembley when we beat Notts County 2-0.

It was a great night, bringing players together who had not seen each other all together as a group for years.  We heard loads of interesting snippets from the Geoffrey Richmond era, the different management styles of and Lennie Lawrence and Chris Kamara and how each brought the best out of the players, and how the belief as a team just went from strength to strength that season.  We also heard some funny stories which are best kept off print for libel reasons (though the post-season friendly preparations for the Feyenoord game sounded pretty good if I say so myself!)

It’s worth mentioning that the players all donated their time for free, which on a Sunday evening is a big ask.  A couple of the guys don’t exactly live locally either, so their willingness to travel to meet with our members is greatly respected.  We would like to say a HUGE thank you to Neil, Andy, Ian and Wayne and we hope you had a good time reminiscing about the good old days.  We know we did.

We’d also like to say a MASSIVE thank you to Tom and Dom from Bantams Banter who were our hosts for the evening.  These guys are fantastic and they really know how to keep four ex pro’s in check.  Thanks for your time Tom and Dom, we really appreciated it and hope to see you again soon.
